At the beginning of the year I send a comprehensive note home to the  parents of the students in my class. I ask them to save items that they would normally place in their recycle box. One of the items is cereal boxes. Cereal boxes are  referred to as box board in my classroom. The students bring them to school and we store them in a large clothes hamper. The students use them to create geometric three dimensional models,  projects and for math geometry tests. This saves a lot of bristol board.
Our Green Classroom

I have ten computers in my classroom. Two are advanced computers, connected to the Internet, one for my use and the other is for the students in my class to use. The other eight  are either Pentium one or two. They are older, less powerful computers, but run very well. They are recycled computers given to me by parents, or the school board.  They are not hooked up to the WEB. Windows 98 runs very well on them. They are connected to an eight port hub. This allows me to have one printer serving eight computers. As the students create work using the computers, the work can be shared. I can edit their work from my desk computer. This computer is also connected to the TV behind me and above my head. When I edit a student’s work, the other students can observe and add to the editing process. It's a great way to teach editing. It also saves a lot of paper because only the final copy is printed.
Recycled Computers
We collect egg cartons. The egg cartons are used for liquid paint holders and for construction.
We collect Styrofoam sandwich and hamburger containers. They are also used in construction and painting.
Cutting cardboard with a fine keyhole saw.
Using cardboard and egg cartons to make a layered structure..
We recycle all paper, clean paper products, cardboard, and boxboard.
We collect and disassemble wooden clementine boxes. They can be cut with a fine tooth scroll saw blade or a sharp pair of scissors.
Used CD and DVD disks make excellent wheels for our highly anticipated,  annual,  gravity car race.
Instead of buying large, expensive cardboard or plastic display boards, we design and construct three-dimensional boards with a display stage which helps hold the three back panels in position. This is a popular project for our school’s “Canadian  History Fair.”
We use a variety of blackboards for math, writing,  and design in the classroom. This allows me to present reusable problems to the students. It cuts down on the use of paper,  and students thoroughly enjoy working on blackboards.
I always keep a big supply of fresh newspaper in the classroom. We use it in painting and construction. Older newspaper should be recycled because it becomes brittle. Be careful because wet newspaper can ruin certain unprotected wood surfaces.
